ASIMO: World's Most Advanced Robot

The Honda Motor Company developed ASIMO, which stands for Advanced Step in Innovative Mobility, and is the most advanced humanoid robot in the world. ASIMO can move in different ways, able to turn on light switches, open doors, carry objects, and push carts. ASIMO's body is made of magnesium alloy covered with a plastic resin, which makes ASIMO very durable and lightweight. ASIMO has the ability to recognize moving objects, postures, gestures, its surrounding environment, sounds and faces, which enables it to interact with humans.

Interesting Facts about ASIMO:

  1. ASIMO can run up to 5.5 miles per hour, and in its currently it is able to change direction while in motion, run in circles or a slalom pattern. The newest version can also jump, balance on one foot and sign in both American and Japanese sign language.

  2. Honda says ASIMO is currently not for sale. Information on production costs for ASIMO as well as how many are currently in existence were not available.

  3. DAn earlier version of ASIMO conducted the Detroit Symphony Orchestra and Yo-Yo Ma in a performance of “The Impossible Dream” from “Man of La Mancha” in 2008.
